Abstract
909,405. Valves. BURNETT & ROLFE Ltd. Dec. 5, 1960 [Dec. 11, 1959], No. 42245/59. Class 135. A pressure-control valve comprises a cage member 10 supporting an elastomeric sealing ring 6, and a valve member 16 having an inclined surface 24 for engagement with the sealing ring, such engagement being maintained by maintaining at one of the two sides of the closed valve a sufficiently high pressure, such pressure acting on one side of the ring to press it against both its supporting surface and the inclined surface, a gap being provided between the cage and the underside of the valve member so that upon application of pressure at this side to open the valve, this pressure acts on the sealing ring to urge the latter away from the sloping annular surface to facilitate the valve opening. The sealing ring or seat 6 is of a resilient material, such as rubber, and is clamped between the valve housing 1 and the cage 10 by a nut 11, the operative inner end 5 of the seat being, in its unstressed condition, of cylindrical form. The angle of the inclined surface 18 is so chosen that, when the valve member 16 is pulled into the closed position by a knob 21 secured to a stem 20, thereby distorting the cylindrical portion 5, the gripping effect of the latter on the valve member is just sufficient to maintain the valve closed.
