Abstract

838,850. Valves. VICKERS ARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Oct. 30, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 38692/56. Class 135. A sliding gate valve actuated by a rotary screwed spindle 15 which engages a non- rotatable nut 14 carried on the gate member 13, is characterized in that the gate member is provided at each side with raised annular sealing faces 21 adapted to co-operate with corresponding seating faces formed one on each of two annular sleeve-like elements 22, 23 which are disposed at opposite sides of said gate member and are biased inwardly towards the latter by resilient sealing rings 24, 25 located against shoulders of a valve housing 10, there being a space within the gate member into which the threaded portion of the spindle 15 enters diametrically in relation to the aforesaid annular sealing surfaces as the gate member is moved to its open position. The resilient sealing rings 24, 25 may be 0- rings. Each of the sleeve-like elements 22, 23 is provided with an annular rim or flange which enters the corresponding 0-ring and cooperates with the shoulder of the housing 10 to provide a stop for limiting compression of this 0-ring under the pressure of the controlled fluid acting on the gate member.
