Abstract

750,185. Gate valves. SEAMARK, L. M. C. Oct. 12, 1954 [Oct. 13, 1953], No. 28228/53. Class 135. In a gate valve, the gate is held in the closed position under a pressure greater than the fluid pressure within the valve casing and such pressure is applied through slidably mounted members, such as the pistons 17, which, in the closing movement of the gate, cause a pressure to be applied on opposite sides of the gate in a direction transverse to its opening and closing movements. As shown, the gate 6 which is hollow and of rectangular cross-section is reciprocated by an axially-fixed screwed spindle 13 rotatably mounted in the valve cover 2. The spindle 13 co-operates with a flanged nut 15 received in a transverse slot 14 in the gate. The flange 15a of the nut in the closed position bears on flanged pistons 16 mounted for vertical movement against springs 20 in a gate supporting member 5. The pistons 17 have axial passages 21 which when closed by the flange 15a cause fluid pressure to be applied through branched channels 22 to grooves in resilient rings 24 on each side of the valve. The rings 24 are mounted in grooves in the supporting member 5 and exert pressure on sealing rings 25 engaging the gate. Screw-pins 26 engage slots in the pistons to limit the vertical movement of the pistons. The gate has a bore 6a which is aligned with a through bore 3 when the valve is open. Downward movement of the gate is limited by an adjustable screw stop 10 arranged between legs 11 on the valve casing. A sealing strip 31 is mounted in compression between tne valve cover 2 and the casing 1. In a modification the pistons 17 are mounted in the valve casing proper and not in the supporting member 5.
