Abstract

818,798. Valves. SINGLETON, H. May 13, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17714/56. Class 135. A gate valve in which the gate member is moved axially away from and towards its seat (or seats) prior and subsequent to its transverse movement to open and close the valve respectively, comprises a valve body 10, Fig. 2, having a pair of oppositely facing seats 16, 18 between which a pair of gate members 34 can slide. Each gate member 34 is formed with diametrically opposite lugs 42, Fig. 3, engaged in guideways 44, 46 in the valve body and connected by parallel links 36 to a valve-operating member 20 so that on opening the valve the gate members are moved away from their seats prior to their upward movement and vice versa on the valve being closed. The operating member itself is guided in a guideway 22 and at its upper end is screw-threaded to engage a nut carried on the body cover (not shown), to open and close the valve. Instead of the pair of gate members 34 a single gate member may co-operate with either the inlet or outlet seat. Instead of the screwthreaded member and nut the valve may be operated by any other convenient mechanism which may be mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic. The guide ways 22, 44, 46 may be interrupted and a plate member 54, Fig. 5, slidden through a slot 52 in the valve body after the valve is opened so that the valve operating member, gates and other members may be removed by servicing.
