[Also in Group XXVIII] A gate valve for a pipe line comprises a housing 1, 2, Fig. 1, and a gate member 20a which is movable by a crank mechanism between an open position in which the gate member is withdrawn laterally into a pocket of the housing and a closed position, the housing including the pocket being divided in a plane transverse to the direction of flow through the valve, the gate member comprising two relatively rotatable parts 20, 23 one of which, 20, is articulated to a crank 8 of the crank mechanism so as to be slidable thereby in a straight guide leading into the pocket and to be simultaneously rotated whilst the other part 23 is moved by the part 20 without rotation, in a straight guide parallel to the first-mentioned guide, at least one of the said parts having an inclined surface which, upon relative rotation of the two parts moves relatively to a co-operating surface of the other part so that in the closed position the two parts are spread apart and press against opposite seat openings. As shown, the two parts of the gate member are in screw-threaded engagement with each other. Alternatively, these two parts may have interengaging cam surfaces (Figs. 7 and 8), not shown. It is stated that the housing may include a cavity in which steam can circulate or an electrical heater be accommodated when the valve is for use with very viscous liquids.
