Abstract
607,866. Iris-diaphragm valves. ANGLOIRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., and ANDREWS, E. May 18, 1945, No. 12628. [Class 135] In an iris-diaphragm valve, e.g. for controlling the flow of liquids, the valve leaves are caused to overlap in the closing of the valve and means are provided for applying pressure upon the leaves normal to their surface when the leaves are in the closed position. The valve leaves 24 ... 29, Fig. 1, which may be arcuate or rectilinear, are accommodated in guideways 18, 19 ... 23, respectively in a circular plate 15, Fig. 2, rotatably mounted in the body 1 by means of the annular rib 16 on the plate fitting the annular recess 17 in the body, and are of reduced thickness at their inner edges so as to overlap in the closed position. A worm-driven circular control plate 39 is mounted by means of the boss 9 on the body entering the recess 40 in the plate and has slots 41 engaging studs 42 on each leaf. The recess 40 is formed with cam or wedge surfaces 53, Fig. 6, co-operating with the raised portions 55 on the boss 9 such that rotation of the control plate produces axial movement of the plate to press the leaves together.
