Abstract

688,401. Valves. ALLIED CHEMICAL & DYE CORPORATION. June 26, 1950 [Oct. 12, 1949], No. 15844/50. Class 135. A pressure relief valve, e.g. for a gas main, comprises a body 5, closed by a plate 6 carried on a pair of arms 8, pivoted at one end to lugs 7 and carrying at the other end a roller 28 engaging a cam lever 23 pivoted to lugs 22, and a spring 29 urging the plate to closed position. With the plate closing the body, the roller rests in a recess 34 on the cam which provides a resistance to opening movement of the plate 6, in addition to that of the spring. Thus, a relatively high pressure, e.g. 7 p.s.i., is required on the plate to move the roller out of the recess, but once out it moves against a stop 30 and the pressure is relieved through the open valve. The closing force is then that due only to the spring and hence the plate will not move to close the body until the pressure in the body is reduced to a value less than the opening pressure, e.g. to 1 p.s.i.
