929,192. Valves. CAMMELL LAIRD & CO. (SHIPBUILDERS & ENGINEERS) Ltd. Dec. 1, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1960], No. 41693/60. Class 135. A fluid-flow control valve comprises closure members 4 operated by a spindle 1, wherein initial movement of the spindle brings the closure members into alignment with flow ports 6a and continued movement causes a toggle device 2, 2a to abut a stop 8 and thereby force the closure members on to their seats, the toggle device being free to float with respect to the valve operating mechanism so that the latter does not interfere with the lateral movement. As shown in Fig. 1, the closure members 4 are connected by the toggle linkage 2, 2a which are connected to the end of the spindle via a pin 3b passing through a clearance hole 3c in the spindle, the closure members being additionally spring-loaded against their seats. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the closure members are formed with spherical recesses engaged by the ends of toggle members 13, the other ends of the toggle members having spherical recesses 13b engaging a ball 14. The ball 14 also engages with a movable spindle 15 which, when the closure members are in the closed position shown, abuts a stop 8 and thereby tends to straighten the toggle joint and so forces the closure members on to their seats. The spindle may be operated by manual, piston, or electromagnetic means.
