Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A regulating valve 3 connecting a steam pipe 1 to a pipe 2 at a lower pressure is of single beat lift type (Fig. 6, not shown). The valve can be opened and closed through an electric motor 5 or a handwheel 6 through a drive 4 and fixed nut operating a screwed spindle 7. The spindle is fast with a pair of spaced plates 9, 13. A stem 12 guided in the spindle 7 passes through the bottom plate 13 and is connected through a differential piston 15 with the valve 3. Between the plates 9, 13 is a spring 10 connected at one end to the stem 12. From closed position the valve 3 can open automatically against the spring 10, under the control of a pilot valve 16 responsive to pressure in the pipe 1. Upstream and throat zones of the pilot valve are connected across the piston so that on excess pressure in pipe 1 the main valve 3 is opened. A dashpot may be incorporated in the transmission to the main valve, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). In a modification the spring is arranged in a guide (22) fixed directly to the piston, Fig. 6 (not shown).
