Abstract

750,181. Valves. UNITED STATES METALLIC PACKING CO., Ltd., and STEPHENS, J. April 29, 1954 [Oct. 1, 1953], No. 26903/53. Class 135. The portion of a lift valve closure member 9 which lies within the seat orifice is provided with a passage 12 leading to a recess of greater cross-sectional area than the seat orifice, and, this recess houses a piston 14 against the upper face of which the end of the valve operating spindle 19 engages. As the member 9 is capable of limited movement relatively to the piston, pressure fluid entering the recesses presses the valve firmly on to its seat. Spindle 19 screws through a cover 5 on the valve body, the cover being held in position by a split-pin 6. A cover 15 held in position by a key 16 covers the recess in the member 9. Sealing rings 11, 18 are provided on the peripheries of member 9 and piston 14, respectively. A passage 23 through cover 5 puts the upper faces of member 9 and piston 14 at atmospheric pressure.
