Abstract

749,932. Manually-actuated valves. VALVES, Inc., E. March 3, 1954 [Aug. 18, 1953], No. 6214/54. Class 135. A composite removable seat unit for a gate valve 28 comprises spaced parallel resilient rings 120, 122 interconnected along a part of their circumference at 124 by a resilient bridge and rigid reinforcing rings 130, 134 lining and bonded to the resilient rings. The rigid rings have retaining lips 136 engaging under body shoulders. Inlet pressure at 32 moves the gate, loosely attached to its spindle 24, to sealingly compress the ring 122 which has ridges on its opposite faces so that inlet pressure passes the ring 120 to enter the chamber 41 and press on the ring 122. A crescent-shaped raised portion 125 not bonded to the rings seals with the base of the gate while a projection 139 reinforced by metal 142 enters a body recess 140 to prevent the seat from turning. Four modifications are shown in which different methods are used to prevent the seat turning. The handle bar 76 secured to a loose ring 72 passes with lost motion through an opening 82 so that an initial impact is applied for turning the boss 90 operating the stem through differential screws 64, 68.
