693,257. Manually-actuated sluice valves. BOLTON'S SUPERHEATER & PIPE WORKS Ltd., and GRAY, T. G. April 9, 1952 [April 18, 1951]. No. 9079/51. Class 135 The casing for a parallel-sided slide valve h, Fig. 1, is recessed at b around the flow passageway to hold a moulded rubber, &c. packing ring into which facing rings d are sprung and which is compressed by the cover g of the valve casing acting through a saddleshaped ring f surrounding the valve plate h, as shown, the packing ring is made up of two parts. As the packing wears. pressure will be applied to the top of the saddle f when the valve is in the closed position by a shoulder i on the valve spindle o. Packing j is also provided between the cover g and the casing. The valve is moved up and down through the engagement of its spindle in a rotary nut m the latter having a substantially square external shape, Fig. 3, so that there is a slight lost motion between the turning of the operating wheel k and the resulting movement of the nut and, at the same time, the nut is started in its movement by a blow from the projections n on the wheel.
