Abstract

759,218. Valves. NEUE ARGUS GES. May 31, 1954 [July 10, 1953], No. 16027/54. Class 135. In a rotary spherical plug cock resilient packing rings which bear against the plug are stretched over cylindrical bosses of slightly larger diameter than the internal diameters of the rings. As shown, a spherical plug 5, Fig. 1, rotatable by a rod 13 having a key 17 which coacts with stops 11a on the casing 1, to position the plug in its open and closed positions, is clamped between spherical seats 22, 25 formed on cylindrical bosses 20, 23 of the casing 1 and a connecting socket 7 respectively. Packing rings 26, 27 of synthetic or natural rubber having a Shore hardness of about 80 to 90 are stretched over the bosses which have a diameter 5 to 10 per cent larger than the internal diameter of the rings. The rings, before the plug is clamped between the spherical faces of the bosses, stand proud of these faces. In a modification, the bosses on which the seats are formed and over which the packing rings are stretched are on loosely mounted support rings to permit adjustment between the seats and the plug perpendicular to the flow passage through the cock. In another embodiment, the casing is split in vertical halves 35, 36, Fig. 3, and held together at the top by a cap nut 19 and at the bottom by a nut and a bolt 34 passing through flanges formed on the halves. Each packing ring may be encircled by a metal split ring to give it added support.
