A shut-off valve having a valve member in the form of a plunger 1 which co-operates with a sealing ring 8 between the inlet and outlet and is guided by a second sealing ring 3 sealing the valve body, these rings being spaced by an intermediate lantern bush 9 and being under the action of an axially compressing spring 11, is characterized in that the assembly of the sealing-rings, lantern bush and spring is compressed by an axially adjustable cover 5 through which an operating spindle 4 extends. In a modification, the spring is disposed between the lantern bush and the second sealing-ring 3. In another modification, the spring is incorporated with the lantern bush which comprises inner and outer apertured sleeves housing the spring in an annular space therebetween. One of the sealing rings may also be formed in two parts axially spaced, and the spring, or a number of springs in ring formation, may be arranged between the two parts of the sealing ring.
