Abstract
889,952. Valves. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. May 27, 1958 [June 3, 1957], No. 16829/58. Class 135. In a rotatable tapered plug valve assembly, where an operating stem 18 of the plug extends through an opening in the body 11, 25, there is provided seal means surrounding the stem within the opening and comprising an annular structure 28, 29 which is rigid under axial compression and defines opposed annular recesses opening radially inwardly and outwardly to relate surfaces of the stem and body opening respectively, radially compressed deformable seal rings 35, 36 located in these recesses, resilient means such as a washer 37 of resilient material surrounding the stem adjacent the seal means, and a member 39 associated with the opening and adjustable or settable axially to compress the resilient means 37 and urge the seal means as a unit towards the upper end 19 of the plug to provide and maintain a desired seating force on the plug that is transmitted through the annular structure of the seal means and the compressed resilient means. As shown, a composite sealing diaphragm 23, 24 is clamped between the body parts and extends beneath the annular structure. The sealing rings may be of inverted U-shaped section and may be of rubber, nylon, or polytetrafluorethylene. An additional sealing ring may be provided immediately surrounding the stem 18. In alternative embodiments the resilient washer 37 is replaced by a " Belleville " type spring washer. Specifications 828,937 and 889,953 are referred to.
