Abstract

907,621. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. AUDCO Ltd. April 7, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959], No. 31021/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] Means for providing a seal between two parts comprising on the one hand the body 14 of a fluid-control valve such as a rotary plug valve or of a pressure vessel and on the other hand the closure member 12 of the valve or lid of the pressure vessel, comprises an annular sealing element which is mounted for axial movement in an annular recess in one of the parts, this element being sealingly engageable at one end with the other part, a portion of said end being formed of rubber or other resilient material and a further portion being formed of metal or other rigid material, and said annular recess being provided with a pair of ports 15, 17 for respectively introducing fluid under pressure into the two opposite ends of the recess whereby either end of said sealing element can be subjected to fluid pressure as required. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the sealing element consists of a ring 10 of resilient material reinforced by two metallic rings 11 of curved angular cross-section which contact the other part 12. In another form the element consists of an annular metallic part 26, Fig. 4, provided with an outer sealing ring 24 and with a radially inner resilient ring part 27 of generally channel-shaped cross-section of which one end contacts the other part 12. Various other forms are described.
