Abstract

901,607. Valves. GORDON & CO. Ltd., JAMES. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957], No. 34799/57. Class 135. Leakage past a butterfly valve is detected, or may be prevented, e.g. in tanker ships handling volatile liquid fuels and to avoid the risk of explosion, by connecting either to a detecting device or to a source of pressurizing fluid such as an inert gas or a liquid immiscible with the fuel, an annular space enclosed at the periphery of the valve member 8 between two sealing rings 5, 6 spaced axially in the housing 1, 2, the valve member being actuated by rotative means having its axis of rotation disposed out of the plane of the valve member so as to leave the periphery of this member entire, e.g. as disclosed in prior Specification 824,569. The necked section rings shown are of artificial rubber and housed in complementary grooves in a ring 2 recessed into the main body 1. Pressure fluid supplied through a pipe 12 forces the rings tighter against the valve member, this pipe also being connectable to the leakage detector.
