Abstract

937,158. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. AUDCO Ltd. April 7, 1960 [April 7, 1959; June 26, 1959], Nos. 8240/59 and 21963/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] Means for providing a seal between two parts comprising on the one hand the body 25 of a pressure vessel and on the other hand a closure 26 of the vessel, comprises an annular seating member 17 mounted on one of the said parts so as to be movable in an axial direction relative thereto whilst remaining in sealing engagement therewith, and having at one axial end an annular sealing element 18 which is axially movable relative to the seating member 17 by means of fluid pressure, whereby one axial end of the sealing element 18 can be brought into sealing engagement with the other of said parts when the seating member 17 is advanced toward said other part. As shown, the end of the seating member toward the body of the vessel is formed as an annular piston 13 having convex sides and to which fluid pressure can be applied through a connection (not shown), this piston being opposed by a similarly shaped loose annular piston 20 engaging the seating member and to which fluid pressure can be applied through a connection 21, whereby to advance or retract the seating member. Fluid pressure is applied behind the sealing through a connection 28 in the body which communicates, through a sliding connection as shown carried by the piston 13 and passages in the seating member, with a space behind the sealing element. In a modification, the arrangement is reversed in that the seating member and sealing element are arranged to take up against the body of the vessel instead of the closure. The scope of the invention covers sealing between a movable valve closure and a valve body (see Group XXIX).
