Abstract

950,749. Valves. W. HARTMANN. Dec. 5, 1960 [Dec. 8, 1959], No. 41810/60. Heading F2V. The plug 2 of a rotary, spherical valve is engaged by sealing rings 10 carried by annular elements 8 which are mounted in sleeves 25 so arranged that, after removal of a cover 6, the sleeves can be moved away from the plug to an extent sufficient to permit withdrawal of the plug from the housing when the plug is in the open position. As shown, the sleeves 25 are externally screw-threaded to engage screwthreaded bushes 27 in the housing and their inner ends have slots 35 whereby they may be turned by a suitable tool. Extensions 26 of the sleeves 25 are sealed by rings 34 and the elements 8 carry sealing rings 33 in annular grooves which coact with annular projections on the sleeves 25. To enable an effective seal to be made irrespective of the direction of applied fluid pressure the internal and external diameters of the grooves are made larger and smaller, respectively, than the effective internal and external diameters of the rings 10. In a modification, the rings 25 are made slidable in the housing, are urged towards the plug by springs or by grease or fluid pressure introduced into spaces 36, and are secured in normal operative position by U-shaped plates engaging external grooves in the rings and retained by the cover 6. Alternatively the grooves may be engaged by bolts.
