Abstract

904,274. Pipe stoppers. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., TEMPLEMAN, K. A., and McINTYKE, S. R. B. June 12, 1961 [Aug. 4, 1960], No. 27045/60. Class 99(1). A plug for insertion into the bore of a pipeline 11 to provide a seal comprises a pair of flexible cups 17, 20 positioned with the rims thereof towards each other, mechanical means for expanding the rims of the cups, and means for permitting entry of fluid into the space between the cups whereby when the plug has been inserted into a pipeline and the rims of the cups expanded by the mechaincal means to make contact with the wall of the pipe line, the space between the cups may be filled with a fluid at a pressure above that prevailing in a pipeline so that the access of material from the pipeline into the space between the cups is opposed by the pressure gradient. As shown, the neoprene cups 17 and 20 are respectively sealed by nuts 18, 22 against a face-plate 16 of a spindle 15 and a housing 21 slidable on the spindle. A centre disc 26 slidably mounted on the spindle has conelike surfaces 27, 28 each of which engages a cup. Rotation of a locking nut 24, causes the surfaces 27, 28 to force outwardly the rims of the cups to produce a seal with the pipeline by mechanical pressure. Hydraulic fluid is passed through the spindle to radial passages 34 in the disc 26 so that the fluid is supplied freely to the annular space 29 and the spaces 30, 31 to increase the seal with the pipeline. Tapped holes 37, 38 and 39 in the disc, housing and nut facilitate dismantling of the plug.
