Abstract

742,837. Repeater housings. VICKERSARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS), Ltd. June 24, 1954 [July 6, 1953], No. 18699/53. Class 38 (1). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXVI] A submerged elongated cylindrical shell 1, housing electrical equipment for amplifying telegraph signals, is closed at each end by a bulkhead in the form of a thick circular plate 2 having a shoulder 4 which is adapted to be abutted against an internal shoulder 3 of the shell 1 with the interposition of a packing ring 5, by a ring 7 in screw-threaded engagement with the interiorly threaded end 6 of said shell. The packing ring 5 may be of the kind shown in Fig. 6 of Specification 656,032, [Group XXVI]. The passage of water into the shell is prevented by a sealing device comprising a pair of rubber &c. rings 10, 11 which are located in a shallow groove 9 disposed circumferentially around the closure 2 and are compressed against the ends of the groove by grease or other fluid supplied thereto from cylinders 15 through radial passages 16, the grease pressure being controlled by bolts 20 abutting pistons 17 in the cylinders 15. In one modification, each packing ring 5 has its own associated groove either in the periphery of the closure 2 or in the coacting surface of the shell 1, and in a second, grease is supplied to the cylinders 15 by a gun or pump through non-return valves in the closure. A further circumferential groove 32 is formed in the closure between the groove 9 and packing ring 5 to provide a space in which any water vapour diffusing past the groove may condense. The closure is also provided with an axial aperture 34, to receive an insulated cable 33 with surrounding copper-sheathed ceramic plug 35 and polythene plug 42, and a passageway 47 with ball valve 46 for filling the shell 1 with a dry and inert gas such as nitrogen. Studs 54 on the inner face of the closure secure the amplifying equipment to the completed housing.
