Abstract
945,508. Valves. O. MEYER, and E. SCHUNCK. Dec. 9, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1960; June 21, 1960], No. 42547/60. Heading F2V. A sliding valve closure member, Fig. 2, has a recess receiving a sealing ring which is axially slidable in the recess. The ring comprises a rigid outer ring 8 and a resilient inner ring 9 to co-operate with the valve seat 7. The ring 9 is of the same outer diameter as the recess at the end remote from the seat and is provided with a lip 11, while the outer diameter at the end nearer the seat is equal to the inner diameter of ring 8. A further inner supporting ring 10 may be provided and a spring-loaded plate 16<SP>1</SP> or 16<SP>2</SP> bears on the end of the resilient ring. This plate may be provided with bores 17<SP>1</SP> or 17<SP>2</SP> and/or a plurality of incisions 24. With the valve in the closed position as shown, the spring-loaded plates act to form a seal and this loading is supplemented by fluid passing through the bores or, if the bores are not provided, by pressure momentarily lifting the plate and passing through the incisions 24 to act on the inner end of the rings when the passage 2 contains fluid under pressure. This fluid pressure also acts on the lip 11 to provide a sealing action. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a rotary plug cock. In this case the resilient ring 9 is preferably provided with a chamfer 20 against which the fluid pressure acts when the valve is closed. The ring 9 is preferably made of a comparatively soft material of Shore hardness 45-50. In a further modification the sealing-ring is a single resilient member which may be loaded by a bow spring or a plate loaded by a resilient tube.
