Abstract

865,943. Valves. EDWARD VALVES Inc. Oct. 27, 1959 [Nov. 14, 1958], No. 36357/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVI] A valve, such as a cylindrical plug valve, comprises a housing 10 having inlet and outlet ports 12, 14 communicating with a chamber 16, a closure member 38 having grooves 56, 58, 60 surrounding the ports when the valve is closed and a composite sealing-ring 54 located in each of the grooves, the ring comprising a metal backup ring 62 and a resilient sealing-ring 64 bonded thereto. As shown, the lip 68 of the ring is proud of the back-up ring and the surface of the plug so that, when the latter is assembled into the housing, the lip is compressed into sealing contact therewith and thus maintains a seal at low pressures. When the valve is closed and subjected to line pressure in either direction, the controlled fluid, at the upstream side, enters a clearance-space between the groove 56, 58, 60 and the resilient sealing-ring 64, which may be of synthetic rubber, thereby forcing the lip 68 and portion 70 of the ring into firm sealing engagement with the housing and plug respectively, any extrusion of the rubber being prevented by the back-up ring; the shape of the lip 68 permits any build-up of pressure in the chamber 16 to leak away through the sealing- ring at the downstream side of the valve. In the construction of valve shown in Fig. 7, a tubular sleeve constitutes the body of the valve and is closed at its ends by plates 82, 84, thereby permitting easy access to 0-ring seals 108, 110, 116, 118. The sealing-ring arrangement may be applied to gate valves (Fig. 8, not shown) and to spherical plug valves. A drain hole 75 is provided for draining the chamber 16.
