Abstract

861,976. Ball-and-socket joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Jan. 29, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 13075/58. Class 65(2). The ball 3 is seated in an open ended housing 1 by means of a two-part insert 8, 9 made of resilient synthetic plastic material e.g. nylon, the part 8 remote from the ball stud 4 being in the shape of a cup having an internal radius greater than that of the ball and being held deformed, within its elastic limit, in close seating relationship with the ball by a surrounding integral skirt 8a held in the housing under axial pressure by retaining means at the end of the housing remote from the stud. The retaining means may comprise a plate 10 and circlip 11, as shown, or the plate 10 may be omitted and the skirt 8a make direct contact with the circlip. Alternatively the skirt may be made self-retaining by means of an outwardly lipped rim which engages in an inwardly opening annular groove at the mouth of the housing. The parts 8, 9 are keyed together at their adjacent edges and at least one part is keyed to the housing, e.g. by means of projections 9a. A dust cover 13 is provided.
