Abstract

929,873. Ball joints. QUINTON HAZELL Ltd. March 7, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 7824/59. Class 65 (2). A ball joint comprises a socket 10 closed at one end and containing an inner seating 19 which abuts the end wall 12 and presents a partspherical bearing-surface 20 to the ball 17 and an annular outer seating 22 which surrounds the ball adjacent the stem 18, an annular member 24 being disposed between the outer seating and the side wall of the socket and in engagement with the inner seating to secure the latter immovably in the socket and to retain the outer seating in contact with the ball. The member 24 is preferably a metal ring of J-section which may contain a rubber or like ring 27 or a metal spring and is retained in position in the socket by inward deformation of a flange 29 around the socket mouth. The seatings may be moulded from resilient material such as nylon or may consist of porous phosphor-bronze impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.), and each may include a tough backing made, e.g. of steel. Alternatively the seatings may be made of material including a phenolic resin, woven asbestos and P.T.F.E. A dust cover 30 is secured to the socket by a contractable clip 31.
