886,571. Ball joints. LANGEN, V. Jan. 7, 1960 [Jan. 9, 1959], No 587/60. Class 65(2). An axially loaded ball joint comprising at least one bearing shell 4 (Fig. 1) located within the housing 1 and embracing the ball 7a almost completely is characterized in that the or each shell has, within the region of the equator of the ball, a collar 5 which supports the shell against a corresponding shoulder 6 of the housing, that the or each shell has radially disposed slots 8 starting on one side of the shell and just passing through the collar, the slots starting from the unloaded side of the joint when there is a single shell and from opposite sides when there are two shells, and that one or two hollow spaces 2<SP>1</SP> are provided on the loaded side or sides between the shell or shells and the housing to allow for axial movement of the shell or shells. The shell or shells may be made of a thermoplastic synthetic resin, e.g. a polyamide, or of steel lined with such material, and the resilient tongues 9 formed by the material located between the slots may be elastically supported against the housing cover or pressed against the ball by an additional spiral or plate spring or an elastic cushion or the like. Fig. 5 shows a joint having two identical shells 4, 4<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 6) which are pushed over the ball in opposite directions. The slots 8 of each shell are wider than the remaining resilient tongues 9 so that the shells can inter-fit.
