Abstract

894,523. Ball joints. LANGEN, V. Dec. 30, 1959 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 44261/59. Class 65(2). In a ball joint of the type in which the ball rests, adjacent the opening in the socket through which the ball pin projects, in a cup-shaped ring of resilient material which is caused to conform to the shape of the ball by pressure during assembly of the joint, at least that part 5 of the ring which extends beyond the equator of the ball is widened out conically before assembly and the socket has a cylindrical internal surface of diameter equal to, or smaller than, the smallest external diameter of the ring. Slits 6 which extend to the equator may be formed in the part 5 to assist its deformation. The ring may be conical over its entire height, as shown, or the part 5 may form a conical peripheral extension to the remainder of the ring which is of smaller conicity or cylindrical. The ring may be made of synthetic material, e.g. polyamides, superpolyamides, polycondensation or polyaddition products, or of natural or synthetic rubber or of fabric impregnated with synthetic resin.
