Abstract

863,129. Ball-and-socket joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Jan. 29, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 11446/58. Class 65(2). The ball 3 is seated in a lining 9 of heat responsive synthetic material which is injected through an orifice 8 in the otherwise closed end of the housing 1, after the ball has been positioned in the housing; so as to fill the space therebetween up to an inturned lip 7 around the mouth of the socket, the lining material being cured in situ within the housing. The lining is keyed to the housing to prevent relative rotation, and the lining material is nylon or synthetic rubber of the polyurethane type to which friction-reducing material such as molybdenum disulphide may be added. If synthetic rubber of the polyurethane type is used it can be poured into the joint through the orifice 8 at atmospheric pressure. A lubricant may be injected into the joint after the lining has been moulded. A dust cover 10 is provided.
