Abstract
932,103. Ball joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. July 19, 1961 [Aug. 10, 1960], No. 27706/60. Class 65 (2). The one-piece ball 5, which is a substantially complete sphere, is disposed in bearing means comprising an inner bearing skirt 7, which fits snugly around the portion of the ball adjoining the pin 6 and has an end edge 7a encircling the pin so that the ball can rotate but cannot rock therein, and a separate outer bearing ring 8 which fits inside the mouth of the housing 1 and is internally shaped to provide a seating in which the skirt can both rock and rotate. The skirt can be made of nylon or other synthetic material or may comprise a body of metal, e.g. steel, which may be plated on its outer surface and which has a thin layer of porous bronze bonded to its inner surface, the bronze being impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.) or a mixture of P.T.F.E. and lead or with some other synthetic material. Alternatively the skirt may have an inner surface of P.T.F.E. fibres and an outer surface also of P.T.F.E. fibres or of any suitable synthetic material. The bearing ring 8 is composed of nylon or synthetic rubber such as polyurethane.
