Abstract

761,954. Pivoted joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 12, 1954 [May 25, 1954], No. 32892/54. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A bearing comprises a non-metallic plastic material anchored in the pores of a porous metal bearing member, the plastic material - extending beyond the surface of the porous metal in the form of a myriad of separate nubbles so as to provide a discontinuous plastic bearing surface. In a ball-and-socket joint, shown in Fig. 1, the ball comprises a member 13 of the plastic-impregnated porous metal. A metal stud 14 is rotatably mounted in a bore in the ball 13 and has a lower flanged portion 32 which is maintained in contact with the member 13 by a spring-pressed washer 15. The housing has a metal lining 12 and the bottom is closed by a metal disc 17. In a modification, the bore of a metal spherical member 131 has a tubular insert 40 of plastic-impregnated porous metal and a washer 42 of similar plastic-impregnated material is disposed between the bottom 29<SP>1</SP> of the member 131 and the flanged portion 33 of the stud 14. Another such washer is spring-pressed against the rounded end 34 of the stud 14.
