Abstract

875,789. Ball-and-socket joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 16, 1959 [Sept. 16, 1958], No. 29654/58. Class 65(2). The ball pin 4 has an enlarged head 6 (Fig. 1) at the inner end thereof and is surrounded by a bush 5 of nylon or like material having a partspherical bearing surface urged into engagement with the part-spherical bearing surface of the socket and a conical recess which receives a correspondingly shaped conical portion of the pin or its head, the conical surfaces of the recess and the pin or head being in contact. The bearing surfaces are maintained in engagement by an annular pad 7 which is under compression and is made, e.g., of cotton fabric impregnated with a " dry " lubricant such as polytetrafluoroethylene, or of polyurethane. The bearing surface of the socket may be lined with nylon or the like. The conical surface in Fig. 1 is formed on the ball pin, while that in Fig. 2 is formed on the enlarged head 13. The bush 5 may be made in two or more parts or may comprise a single part having slots to enable it to be placed in position on the pin.
