Abstract

1374261 Ball joints AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 4170/71 Heading E2F In a ball joint of the kind in which a cupshaped socket member 17 contains a resilient bearing member 23 having a part spherical surface 22 to receive the ball of a ball pin 10, a retaining ring 29 is held against both ball and bearing member by an inturned portion 30 of the socket brim to hold the ball in abutment with the bearing member and put the bearing member under pressure in the socket; a flange 31 engaging in a recess 32. The compressive loading on the resilient material (e.g. nylon) of the bearing member acts to urge the ball away from the base of the socket, the stud 11 of the ball pin projecting through the open end of the socket and the retaining ring. A stud 14 to enable the socket to be attached to another component is provided with a flange 15 which has a knurled edge and seats in a cooperating recess 19 formed in the socket material. A flexible sealing cover 33 is secured by circlips 34, 35.
