Abstract

840,176. Ball-and-socket joints. LANGEN, V., [trading as EHRENREICH & CIE., A.]. June 27, 1957, No. 20250/57. Class 65(2). In a joint of the type in which the ball 3 is seated in two truncated spherical resilient bearing rings 4, 5, in a casing 1 closed at its upper end opposite the ball pin 2 by a cover 6 which exerts pressure on one of the bearing rings, the bearing rings have different coefficients of elasticity and are separated by a gap 9. The cover may be in direct contact with the ring 4 or may exert its pressure through a spring 7 and plate 8. The resilient materials for making the bearing rings include polyurethane, which may be of cellular or foam structure and impregnated with lubricant, and polyamides or superpolyamides layered with fabric impregnated with phenol or cresol resins. The rings may be of laminated construction, the elasticity increasing or decreasing towards the bearing surface as required. Specifications 629,906 and 652,432 are referred to.
