Abstract

848,899. Ball-and-socket-joints. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. May 13, 1958 [May 20,1957], No. 15946/57. Class 65(2). Two part-spherical shells 3, 4, each comprise an outer backing layer of solid metal bonded to an inner layer of porous metal having an inner surface of a self-lubricating character which engages the ball 2, and the backing layers are bonded to elastomeric backing elements 6, 7, which are mounted in the housing 10 in a compressed condition with their outer surfaces rigid with the housing. The elements 6, 7, may be bonded to the housing or to outer shells 8, 9, of the form shown clamped in position by a circlip 12. Each inner layer is of porous bronze impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.), and preferably has a thin uninterrupted layer of P.T.F.E. extending over its inner surface. The P.T.F.E. may be substantially pure or may be mixed with one or more fillers. The Provisional Specification also describes a construction in which one or both of the elastomeric backing elements are replaced by a rigid annular member which supports the part-spherical shell and is loaded by a compression spring. Specifications 756,950 and 848,898 are referred to.
