Abstract

894,671. Tube joints. CHICAGO FORGING & MANUFACTURING CO. June 13, 1958, No. 19083/68. Class 99(1). A seal unit for tubes comprises a cup-like retainer member 25, e.g. of metal or nylon, having a cylindrical smooth-surfaced wall 28 and an apertured bottom wall 29, a tube-gripping ring 26 seated on or adjacent a substantially radical surface on the wall 29 and an elastic sealing ring 27, e.g. of synthetic rubber, seated against the ring 26 and within the wall 28. An annular groove 30 is formed in the member 25 for reception of the annular wall 40 of the ring 26 which has a conical portion formed with teeth 42. A reinforcing ring 13 is seated against the ring 26 or on the wall 29 of the member 25. Alternatively two reinforcing rings are placed one on each side of the ring 26. The real unit is held on a tube 1 to be joined to a fitting 2 by a nut 15 which co-operates with the fitting. On screwing the nut 15, the ring 27 is compressed between the end surface 11 of the fitting and the ring 26 and the teeth 42 of the latter penetrate the tube 1. Over-compression of the teeth 42 is prevented by the surface 32 of the wall 29 of the member 25 and the ring 13. In a modification, the reinforcing ring is cup-shaped for reception of the tube-gripping ring which has no circumferential wall, the bottom wall of the reinforcing ring bearing against the wall 29 of the member 25 which is engrooved ; alternatively, two tube-gripping rings in contact with each other, or spaced by a washer, are fitted within the reinforcing ring.
