839,914. Expansion joints. MATTHEWS, C. H. Jan. 19, 1959 [Jan. 17, 1958], No. 1693/58. Class 99(1). In an expansion joint comprising telescopic members 2, 3, the member 3 being recessed for the reception of packing 5 which makes contact with the member 2, and having a screw-threaded periphery for engagement thereon of a gland nut 6, an abutment washer 8 is located between the end of the member 3 and the bottom of the nut so as to limit the pressure that can be exerted on the packing during adjustment of the joint. To limit relative lateral movement of the members, the flanges 9, 10 of the members are coupled by bolts 11.
