Abstract

971,232. Valves. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 27, 1963 [Sept. 13, 1962], No. 34991/62. Heading F2V. A reducing valve has a flexible diaphragm 16 which in use is subjected to the outlet pressure at 14 thereby to control the extent of the valve opening, and at least three rigid plates 33 forming a continuous backing ring over the flexible portion of the diaphragm, the plates being located in position by clamping means 38, 39 which loosely bear on the outer and inner edges only of the plates so that the inclination of the plates may vary when the diaphragm is flexed without offering a substantial resistance to diaphragm movement. The diaphragm may be of polytetrafluorethylene and the space 36 beneath it communicates with the valve outlet through a pipe 35. In a modified construction, a passage in the valve stem communicates with the chamber for the spring 24 which is enclosed by a diaphragm to balance the action of fluid pressure on the closure member.
