Abstract

817,426. Valves. VOLPIN, A. S. May 22, 1956, No. 15841/56. Class 135. The stem 25 of a gate valve, not shown, which passes through the stepped bore in a twopart bonnet 2, has an inner cylindrical part 26 from which depends a threaded portion 30 for engagement with the valve; at the junction of the parts 30, 26 is an annular shoulder 31 that sealingly engages a seat 12. A ball or other bearing 33 is provided around the stem whilst an 0-ring seal 36 is disposed between the threaded parts 6, 14 of the bonnet. Around the outer cylindrical stem part 27 is a washer 37 surmounted by a conventional compressible packing 38 of metal or other material urged against the washer by a gland 40 and nut 23. A seal 47 that co-operates with the stem part 26 comprises a slidable metal ring 47a incorporating inner and outer resilient 0-rings 50, 51 engaging the part 26 and the wall 9 of the bonnet bore, respectively; a shoulder 10 and the lower face of the bearing 33 form stops for limiting movement of the seal 47. A lubricant seal is injected through a fitting 45 to fill all the bore space between the washer 37 and the seal 47; any leakage of the lubricant results in the pressure in the valve body forcing the seal 47 towards the bearing 33 and upon contacting the latter the pressure causes the rings 50, 51 to effect a fluid-tight seal between the stem part 26 and wall 9. Introduction of fresh lubricant will urge the seal 47 towards the lower stop 10.
