Abstract
731,100. Valves., GROVE REGULATOR CO. Feb. 11, 1953 [Feb. 11, 1952], No. 3871/53. Class 135. A valve having a straight-through, fluid flow passage controlled by, e.g., a slide or a plug, is provided with resilient 0-rings for effecting a seal between the opposite sides of the slide or plug and the body of the valve, the arrangement being such that the seal is made only on the downstream side of the valve. Figs. 1, 2B show a gate valve having a slide 22 actuated by a hand wheel 43 secured to a sleeve 42 in screwthreaded engagement with the valve stem 24. The sleeve is supported by ball-bearings in a bonnet 26 retained in the body of the valve by a split-ring 29 engaged in a groove 31, the bonnet being pulled up tight against the ring by screws 35 in lugs 34. A fluid-tight seal is effected between the body and the slide by 0-rings 52 disposed in recesses formed between members 56 and rings 57 of, e.g., stainless steel loosely fitting into the members, the surfaces 67, 69, Fig. 2B, of the members being pressed against the slide 22 by circumferentially-spaced springs 64. In the closed position of the valve, shown in Fig. 2B, and with fluid under pressure entering the left side of the valve, the 0-ring on the left or upstream side of the valve is displaced from contact with the side, while that on the right or downstream side is pressed against the slide by the pressure of the fluid leaking past the surfaces 67, 69 into the valve space 19 which communicates through ducts 78 with the 0-ring recess. Figs. 3, 4 show a plug valve having O-rings 107 disposed in grooves formed between rings 111 loosely fitting into recesses in the valve body and liners 109 located between the valve body and the plug 94. Pressure liquid entering the left side of the valve displaces the left 0-ring from contact with the plug, thus permitting the liquid to leak past the liners 109 to the ring grooves on the right side and press the 0-ring into liquid-tight contact with the plug. Pressure built up by liquid collecting in the bore 106 of the plug may be automatically relieved by a spring-loaded valve 121. Specification 662,448 is referred to.
