A valve gate 10 has a manually rotatable stem 8 threaded in a nut 9 fixed to the gate, which stem is supported in bearings 5, 6; a groove 11 in the stem is provided with a ring 12 which is cast in situ, the ring abutting the bearings 5, 6 to prevent axial movement of the stem. The stem is sealed with a stuffing- box type packing 13.
