A butterfly valve member 14 is operated by a lever through a spindle 18 which intersects the axis of the body but is offset from the plane of an 0-ring 16 mounted in a groove in the disc or in the body. The co-operating parts of the disc and body are partspherical. Alternatively the body part may be conical.
