Abstract

799,867. Valves. CORNELIUS, R. T. July 25, 1955, No. 21443/55. Class 135. A gate valve comprises a body 10 having a well 11 which receives a cylindrical gate 22 of elastic material such as rubber, and means for actuating the gate consisting of a rotatable, screw-threaded spindle 42 engaging an internally threaded sleeve 38 which has a shank 39 embedded in the gate. The gate, which has an integral sealing sleeve 53 clamped between the body and a bonnet 32, carries metal inserts 25, 26 which cover the ports 14, 15 in the body when the valve is closed. In the closed position of the valve the actuating means compresses the material of the gate to cause it to form a fluid-tight seal with the well. Projections on the sleeve 38 engaging grooves in the bonnet hold the gate against rotation. A vent 57 communicates with the space enclosed by the sleeve 53.
