Abstract
865,440. Valves. SULZER FRERES S.A. April 24, 1957 [May 2, 1956], No. 13085/57. Class 135. [Also in Group XXVIII] A coupling 2 for interconnecting two members (e.g. a pressure indicator and a cylinder of an I.C. engine) incorporates a shutoff fluid-control valve 19. The coupling 2 is screwthreaded at 5 and 6 to receive the two members, only one, the connection member 9, being shown. When connected, the member 9 seats against a packing 12 on a shoulder 11 of the coupling housing 2 and so closes a series of ports 15 which extend from the inside to the outside of the housing 2. The shut-off element is a symmetrical double valve having bored stems 19, 20 and seating surfaces 16, 17, one of which, say 16, is biased by the loading spring 14 against the seat 13. The element 19 is reversed when the surface 16 wears. When the member (e.g. the pressure indicator) is screwed on to screw thread 5 a part thereof engages the element 19 to move the surface 16 from the seat 13 so providing a flow path between the members connected to the coupling. Partial unscrewing of the connection member 9 to an extent determined by the collar 40 connects the bore 8 of the member 9 to atmosphere through the ports 15 which are disposed tangentially so that the reaction of the escaping fluid rotates the member 9 until it again seats on the packing 12. In this way dirt particles may be ejected from the I.C. engine cylinder before final connection of the pressure indicator. In another example the member screwed on the screw-threads 6 has a vent passage adapted to be closed by the bottom surface of the coupling housing.
