Class 7(6) The operative fluid spaces 17, 25 of hydraulic clearance adjusting devices comprising spring-loaded pistons 13, 24 forming adjustable supports for the pivots 8, 9, of rocker levers 3, 5, acting upon valve stems 2, 4, are in communication, by way of non- return valves 21, 29, situated outside the cylinders 14, 25, with unpressurized oil collecting chambers 22, 32, 33, the opposite ends of the cylinders 14, 25, being in free communication with the oil collecting space 33. The levers 3, 5 are journalled in bearings 7, 9 which are carried by the pistons 13, 24, the cylinders 14, 25 of which are formed in a casing 11 the top of which is provided with a shallow recess 33 collecting oil thrown off the valve mechanism or sprayed through an orifice 34 in the camshaft, the collected oil draining into the collecting chambers 22, 32. The piston 13 is urged downwards by a spring 16 to take up any clearance between lever 3 and camshaft 6, the chamber 22 being connected to the space 23 below the piston through a passage 19 and to the space 17 above the piston through a passage 18 containing the non-return valve 21 which closes, when the lever 3 is operated, to prevent the piston 13 moving upwards. The piston 24 is urged upwards by a spring 26 to take up clearance between the lever 5 and camshaft 6. the oil from chamber 32 being supplied to the space 25 below the piston through a passage 28 past the non-return valve 29.
