Abstract

451,997. Oil engines; valve mechanism; cylinders &c. KNUDSEN, C. H., 325, 60th Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33197. Convention date, May 18. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke oil engine provided with piston - controlled exhaust ports 15 and scavenging ports 16, the former are further controlled by a ring valve 22 which closes the exhaust before the scavenging ports are closed by the piston. Fig. 1 shows an engine with two rows of radial cylinders with the valves 22 actuated by a pair of cams 25, 25a on the crank-shaft, and rods 26 sliding in guides and connected to rocker arms 30 fitted at their pivots 29 with torsional springs for returning the valves. Each cylinder is composed of a crank-case portion 10 enlarged and threaded at 12 to receive an outer portion 13 having a combustion chamber 14a shaped as shown. The cylinders are provided with air jackets 19 formed with cooling-fins. Fig. 5 shows an opposed-cylinder engine of similar construction, the ring valves 39 being actuated by spring-pressed rods 40 bearing on rockers 44 engaging cams 47. The crank-case portion is closed by plates 54, 54a, and the scavenging chambers are formed by plates 53, 53<a>. This type of engine may be used in the wing structures of aeroplanes.
