Abstract

356,919. Fourstroke engines. COX, F. J., Las Palomas, New Mexico, U.S.A. Aug. 25, 1930, No. 25339. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] Valve gear.-The intake and exhaust valves for the upper combustion chambers are operated through push rods, and the intake and exhaust valves of the lower chamber are operated through rocker arms, a single cam being provided on one cam shaft for actuating the upper and lower intake valves of each cylinder, and a single cam on a second shaft actuating the upper and lower exhaust valve of each cylinder, while the respective push rod and rocker arm contact with the corresponding cam at points 90‹ apart. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a four-cylinder engine is used and the upper and lower cylinder heads 12, 13 have each a pair of intake ports 14 and exhaust ports 15 controlled by poppet valves 16, 17. The poppet valves of the upper head are actuated by rocker arms 20 through push rods 21 from two cam shafts 23, driven in opposite directions at half speed. The poppet valves of the lower head are operated by rocker arms divided into two groups, namely 27 for the chambers 7, 8, and 29, Fig. 4, for the chambers 5, 6. By this means the timing of the cycles in the chambers is varied. Pumps 33 convey lubricating-fluid through a passage to the circumference of the pistons.
