Abstract

The lower end of the tapper (4) slides in a bore in the cylinder head (3). The upper part of the tappet (4) is guided by a hole in the cover plate (8). A piston (6) is rigidly attached to the tappet (4) and has a diameter slightly less than the upper part of the bore. The piston (6) is provided with a number of holes covered by thin plates. The lower plate has holes to match the holes in the piston. When the tappet moves downwards, the inertia of the plates uncovers the piston holes allowing a free flow of oil. Downward motion is damped because the oil can flow only through the clearance around the piston.
