Abstract

A projecting stop (15) is fixed to the wall (10) adjacent to the fire door (13). A cylindrical is fixed to the top of the door. This cylinder (11) has a piston (21) with a rounded head projecting from one end (26). Two springs (28 & 29) connect the piston to another piston of larger diameter (40). The body of the cylinder is filled with oil. When the door is opened the projecting piston is depressed and the lower spring is compressed and the upper spring is extended and the resulting pressure holds the door open. The pressure on the large piston causes oil to move, thereby reducing the pressure on the projecting piston and allowing the door to close.
