Abstract

In a linear hydraulic cylinder with cushioning means to cushion the impact of the piston on the cylinder at each extremity of its stroke, each cushioning means comprises a cylindrical sealing element 16, 12 mounted on the piston rod 7 or on a rod 11 mounted on the piston 8, and urged away from the piston by a compression spring 17, 14. As the piston approaches one extremity of its stroke, one of the cylindrical sealing elements 16, 12 engages an annular sealing face 23, 22 in the cylinder wall and seals off the cylinder at the end of the cylinder which the piston is approaching. Fluid leaving the cylinder must then pass through a passage 19 and needle valve 20 (a passage 19 and valve 20 being provided at each end of the cylinder) and the rate of flow of fluid through the valve 20 controls the deceleration of the piston. <IMAGE>
