Abstract

The hydraulic ram acts in a straight line, and has means for damping when the piston strikes the cylinder at one or both ends of its stroke. Each damper has a cylindrical seal (12, 16) mounted on the piston rod (7) or the piston itself, and coming into contact with an annular sealing face (22, 23) near the cylinder end, so as to shut off the space between piston (8) and seal as the piston approaches the end. A leakage passage of narrow cross-section bypasses the seal in the cylinder wall allowing fluid escape. The seal is movable axially in relation to the piston in opposition to a spring (14, 17).
